On Job Search and Depression

On Job Search and Depression Years ago I wrote a post titled Depression Clouds Everything. It was the post that no one was supposed to comment on, but there are over 500 comments. The reaction blew my mind and helped me see that I was not even remotely alone is this feelings. Last night I was talking to a friend who struggles with depression, and Ive been thinking about how I could help her. She said she really feels the weight of the world, and all of the big, heavy, negative things. What a burden   There are so many things to worry and fret about, and it really can be debilitating. This morning I read an article that talked about  this very thing titled The World Is A Great Place. It listed a bunch of wonderful things that are happening in the world things you typically wont read in the news next to the bombings and shootings and all the other horrible things going on. It reminded me of the depression-fighting tactic  were taught, to list things we are grateful for. I invite you to write your own lists things you are grateful for and things that are actually going right in this world.   Please take some time to do this today!   Even in depressing, dark times you should get value from listing positive things! The Recruiters Guide to Hootsuite There’s a plethora of social media management tools available to recruiters such as Buffer, Tweetdeck, IFTTT and Dlvr.it just to name a few. Everyone has their own favourite but for complete novices, here’s how you can get started with Hootsuite â€" probably the best free tool available today: Connect your accounts: On the free version, you can connect up to 5 different social media profiles on a single account. You can also connect any company/brand page on Facebook or Google+ as long as you are a page administrator or owner. Pro tip: You can add your favourite LinkedIn groups as individual profiles to Hootsuite and change them as often as you need to. Get organised: The easiest way to organise your dashboard is to use a different tab for each social network. For example, within each tab you can create separate streams for each LinkedIn group that you have connected to your Hootsuite account. The streams will then show you the discussions happening within each group so you can keep track of the most recent discussions. You can also add an additional stream that shows all the updates and jobs you have scheduled to go out in case you need to edit your updates. If you’re using Twitter, you can create a stream for each Twitter List, keyword or hashtag  that your are monitoring. You should also set up separate streams for your scheduled or sent updates as well as any Direct Messages (DMs) your receive. Hootsuite, let’s you add up to 10 streams in a single tab so you can also include a tab for “Mentions” and “My Tweets, Retweeted”. By adding these streams, you can easily track tweets that are related to you and respond accordingly. Pro tip: Instead of just sending a thank you whenever someone retweets or mentions you, you can also follow them or “Favourite” one of their tweets as a sign of gratitude. Compose an update: Hootsuite’s real strength is obviously in allowing you to schedule and post to multiple networks, profiles or groups with a single click. When creating a new post, just select the profiles you want to use at the top of the page.   Enter your message in the Compose box. If you’re sharing an article or a job advertisement, use the handy link shortener to attach the link to your update. Pro tip: If you want to add an image thumbnail to your LinkedIn updates, select a Google+ or Facebook account at the same time. You wont have to send the update on those network but it will force Hootsuite to look for an image to accompany your LinkedIn update. Once a thumbnail is generated, you can then deselect the Facebook or Google+ account and hit send. Posting an update: Once you’ve finished composing your message, you can choose to send it out immediately or you can choose a specific date and time in the future. This feature is especially useful if you want to queue updates that will go out later in the week or while you’re away on holiday. You can use your time on social media efficiently by scheduling most of your updates in the morning and then just checking on your dashboards throughout the day. Pro tip: Use the AutoSchedule feature when posting to multiple LinkedIn groups. The AutoSchedule feature chooses the optimal time to post on each channel. This means that your update will be posted to the group when it is most active; with the added benefit of not spamming your followers’ news feed with multiple simultaneous updates. Contacts: If you’re a Twitter user and/or a Google+ page administrator, Hootsuite gives you handy access to a contacts list from your Twitter and Google+ networks. From this page, you can easily follow people or check out their bios and Klout scores. Apps: Although Hootsuite only supports Twitter, Facebook, Google+ Pages, LinkedIn, Foursquare, WordPress and Mixi, you can still use it to monitor other networks. You can install Apps as streams and monitor your feed on Youtube, Xing, Viadeo, Instagram, Flickr, etc. Depending on the app, some will allow you to post an update from within the stream although you won’t be able to use Hootsuite’s scheduling feature. Hootsuite Syndicator: The Hootsuite Syndicator is Hootsuite’s RSS app. It was built as a replacement for the now defunct Google reader. Once youve set up  your Hootsuite Syndicator Streams, all the content you want will be available to read and share straight from your dashboard. If your company website provides an RSS feed of jobs, you can subscribe to that and share your ads straight from Hootsuite instead of using a secondary tool like Bullhorn. Hootlet Extension: Hootsuite offers browser extensions for Chrome and Firefox. The Hootlet extension lets you share any webpage without having to open Hootsuite on another tab or window. Mobile: If you’re so inclined, Hootsuite also offers a mobile app for Android an iOS. The functionality is very similar to the desktop version so you can rely on an uninterrupted workflow, regardless of the device you’re using. The free Hootsuite account is a powerful tool for any recruiter’s social media toolbox. For added features such as analytics reports, bulk scheduling, team accounts and approval processes, you can easily upgrade to the Pro version.

Dont Take No for an Answer

Dont Take No for an Answer No doesnt really mean no.   It just means I am not comfortable enough to say yes now. Lets toughen up a bit.   Rejection is something we are all afraid of! (Truth be told, it is one of MY greatest fears).   But seldom will you experience true rejection.   What I mean is, people arent saying No, I wont help you.   The reality is, they either dont respond or dont follow through. That isnt rejection. Risking it all You have nothing to lose! Why wont you pick up the phone and call that person, follow up on that lead, reach out to a past coworker? Are you not sure what youll say?   Heres what I know.   If you have a script or outline of how you will introduce yourself and what you are specifically asking of them, youll feel a lot better. The more often you do this, the easier it will get, I promise.   I used to do B2B telemarketing. Be Prepared for objections You will encounter people who dont know how to help you.   Thats why you need to be very clear. Have you ever heard these: I dont know of any jobs I dont do the hiring Your response could be: Thats too bad, but, I am actually looking for people to have a conversation with so that I can learn more about XYZ company (Q industry or P occupation). If you were me, who do you think I should speak to? Keep Control When you allow someone to do a favor for you, youve lost all control. In many cases it is better for you to offer to do the legwork or make the call.   Otherwise, you know what will happen.   That well-meaning friend just doesnt have the same set of priorities you do.   It may take them days or weeks to get to it.   Offer to de-burden them so you wont feel like a pest when you have to call them in a week or two. Persistant vs Pest Theres a fine line here.   However, no two people see things quite the same way.   Do not use your own particular filter to judge what others might see as pesky.   If you are sincere in your request and it isnt spammy, you should be OK. Now, it is up to you This week, take small steps outside of your comfort zone.   Push yourself.   See what happens. Call every name you are given this week. Call them! Ask 2 people to meet with you to discuss your target companies. Find the hiring managers for the jobs youve applied to and call them to ask where they are in the review process. Are you waiting for someone to get back to you call all those people this week. Dont wait another day.

Robert Louis Stevenson Whether youve been teaching English in Korea, working on a farm in New Zealand or performing an internship in Vancouver on a Canada work permit, working abroad experience will make you more employable when you come home. However, in order to take full advantage of your working abroad experience you need to know how to present it in a job interview. Some employers will still see a trip abroad as an extended holiday, so it is up to you to show them how this experience gave you new skills and improved your performance. When you are describing your strengths in a job interview, this is your chance to impress them with all of the amazing things that you have done while you were working abroad. Anticipate Questions and Prepare Before you head into the interview, think about the type of common interview questions that you will likely be asked, such as: Describe a situation where you were faced with an obstacle and overcame it. Give an example of a time when you adapted to change. Describe a situation where you resolved a conflict with an unsatisfied customer. These questions will be different according to your field, but they always involve you using an example to show that you have prior experience with a certain type of situation. Before the interview, brainstorm a list of possible questions such as these that the employer might ask and then think of moments in your working abroad adventure which might apply. For example, adapting to change might apply to the challenge of learning to speak French so that you could navigate your way around Paris. An obstacle could be applying for your New Zealand Visa or when your bus or train was cancelled and you had to find alternate transportation on short notice to get to your job on time. Working abroad will have given you lots of challenges and situations to choose from! Employers are not just looking for qualifications; they are looking for someone with personality who will get excited about the work. When you show your passion it will make you stand out from the other people that they interviewed that day. They will see that you have the drive and the passion to make something happen. (That said; make sure that you are only sharing your enthusiasm from the professional side of the working holiday, because your stories about getting drunk on the beach in Thailand on the weekends might not make the most responsible impression.)
